One of the greatest and rarest joys of music is the opportunity to hear a great musician in the intimacy of her own home. We are thrilled that Yelena Grinberg, one of New York's finest pianists, has agreed to welcome us into her home a very few times each year for a special series of intimate concerts, played on her own piano, just for us. At these concerts, Yelena will talk about and perform some of her very favorite works from her vast repertory. Yelena's living room seats just 25 people, so we strongly recommend early registration.

Johannes Brahms was a notoriously gruff and difficult person. But throughout his career he was surrounded by friends, and this concert will explore some of the extraordinary works for viola and piano composed by Brahms himself, and three of the composers closest to him--Robert Schumann, Joseph Joachim, and Robert Fuchs.

At the heart of concert will be one of the greatest of Brahms's late masterpieces, the breathtakingly beautiful Sonata No.2 for Viola & Piano. Brahms's lifelong friend Joseph Joachim will be represented by his Romance in C Major for Viola & Piano, Early in Brahms's career, Brahms was befriended and encouraged by Robert Schumann, and the program will include Schumann's Märchenbilder (Fairy-Tale Pictures) for Viola and Piano, of 1851. And Brahms in turn befriended and mentored several younger composers whose work he admired, notably Robert Fuchs whose Sonata for Viola & Piano of 1899 is one of the great neglected musical treasures of the 19th century. Fuchs's own students included Mahler, Sibelius, and Korngold.

Pianist Yelena Grinberg is a virtuoso whose playing combines strength, intellect, and passion. She has performed with the Moscow Symphony as well as at important festivals in England, Spain, France, and Switzerland. She has won major awards in numerous competitions and was the 2005 winner of the Artists International Competition. Her sold-out performance at Carnegie Hall's Weill Hall was proclaimed by the New York Concert Review "a grand performance in a grand tradition."

Yelena Grinberg will be joined by violist Edward Klorman. Klorman has appeared as a soloist with the Rochester Chamber Orchestra and New York's Camerata Notturna, as well as in chamber music with Claude Frank, Orli Shaham, Joseph Kalischstein, and the Borromeo, Orion, and Ying Quartets.

A wine & cheese reception with the performers will follow the performance.
